Standing at 8163m in the Gorkha region, Manaslu, otherwise known as the “Mountain of The Spirit”, is the 8th highest mountain in the world and a beauty like no other… Recognizable from any angle with its pinnacle summit, Manaslu has always been a great 8000m peak for testing your boundaries, whether that’s climbing without o2 or skiing down the mountain, Manaslu is the place to be.

WHAT THE CLIMB INVOLVES

During the expedition you will begin by flying to Samagaun and trekking to Manaslu Basecamp from Samagaun village which is a one day trek.

Upon reaching Basecamp you will have training sessions to bring you up to speed on techniques and skills before setting foot on the mountain. You will then embark on two rotations to acclimatize and deposit equipment. One rotation to camp 1 and one to camp 3.  Once the perfect weather comes round you will be ready for the summit push.

Manaslu is not an easy peak. This mountain takes lives every year, but this is mostly due to lack of experience, something we do not take lightly here at AGA Adventures. Every one of our sherpas is professionally trained to the highest standard and has at least summited 4 or more 8000m peaks before. We also expect you, as the client, to prepare yourself as much as possible. This means following a training plan that will have you in tip top fitness as well as learning basic skills like knots, how to put on crampons etc. Our main aim is to bring you on this journey from beginning to end in the safest and most successful way possible and so we are always here to create a plan for your ultimate ambition which may include summiting a 6000m peak or joining us for winter skills training.

We invite you to join us on this once in a lifetime expedition to the Summit of Manaslu.

FAQs

  • Do I need prior mountaineering experience to climb Manaslu?

Yes. Manaslu is an 8,000m peak, and while it's often described as one of the more approachable mountains in that category, that's a relative comparison, not an absolute one, it's still a serious, technical, high-altitude expedition. We expect climbers to have experience on 6,000–7,000m peaks (Island Peak, Lobuche East, Ama Dablam, or similar) before attempting it.
  • Is it 1:1 guiding on the mountain?

Yes, we run 1:1 guiding on Manaslu, every climber has a dedicated Sherpa guide throughout. It's central to how AGA operates across every expedition: safety and genuine care for our clients come first, always.
  • What is the basecamp setup like?

Our Manaslu Base Camp is one of our proudest achievements, beautiful, comfortable, and practical, purpose-built by AGA. You'll have your own personal sleeping tent with a 6-inch mattress and built-in shelving, geyser hot showers, and proper sit-down toilets. The food is genuinely incredible: fresh meat and vegetables, cooked well and tailored to your needs. This is somewhere you can properly rest and recover between rotations, not just survive between them, and it's consistently one of the things past climbers highlight as a favourite part of climbing with us.
  • Is it technical? What are the hardest sections on Manaslu?

Manaslu is graded PD+ to AD on the alpine scale, less technical than most other 8,000ers, but still a real mountaineering challenge, not a walk-up. The section between Camp 1 and Camp 2 is the most demanding, crossing a heavily crevassed glacier with seracs and steep ice sections. There's also a narrow, exposed summit ridge near the top. Avalanche risk is a genuine factor on this mountain, and we mitigate it by waiting out unstable weather and choosing our summit windows carefully rather than pushing on regardless, route-finding and timing are a core part of how we guide the climb.
  • What is the cost of climbing Manaslu?

Manaslu is the cheapest of the 8,000m peaks to climb, with prices typically ranging from $14,000 to around $25,000, depending on the facilities required and level of support. We sit somewhere in the middle of that range: we don't overcharge our clients, but we provide a genuinely high-quality, well-supported service. Get in touch and we'll walk you through exactly what's included in your quote.
